Thanks to the Generous Sponsors

There are some really amazing things that guests, volunteers and friends of rescue encountered during the recent VGSR Golf Tournament and Auction.  Great dogs -  VGSR alumni, fosters and canine siblings abounded; wonderful volunteers - some 'working' the tournament and others just enjoying the beautiful day or playing golf; friends of rescue - who came out to show their support and, of course, the golfers who thoroughly enjoyed the event.  In addition, anyone who either walked or rode the golf course encountered Sponsor Signs - evidence of behind the scenes support provided by businesses and friends of rescue.    Quite a few of these Sponsors have supported the Golf Tournament for many years; for others, this was the beginning of what we hope will be a long relationship.

Raven is looking so wonderful - check out her story in her August post

Please extend a HUGE Thank You to our sponsors and support these businesses whenever you can.

Note that the stars after the Sponsor's Name indicates the number of years that they have helped sponsor this important VGSR fundraiser.

Meet Zim

Zim came to us from the Baltimore City Animal Shelter. While he's not exactly a GSD, he's cute and personable and we're happy to have him.  When he first arrived, Zim had the worst case of kennel cough his foster's vet had ever seen. It took almost a month of different antibiotics to clear it up. After that, he was neutered and microchipped. Now he's 100% healthy and ready for his fur-ever home.

We can't tell you exactly what mix of breeds Zim is...some GSD, maybe some Manchester Terrier, a touch of Shar-Pei, and probably other things as well. At approximately one year old, what we can tell you is that he's friendly, active and playful. He hasn't yet met anyone, human or canine, whom he dislikes. He would love a running buddy or someone to romp around the yard with him.

Zim is housetrained and crate-trained and could probably learn to live with a cat. He would excel at obedience and agility. We call him Zim-Zam-Zoom as he goes flying around the house, leaping over footstools in a single bound.  He will eat almost anything, adores his squeeky toys and loves to chew on rawhides.

Could Zim be the boy for you?

More Businesses Support VGSR

We’ve been so busy updating the Auction catalog, adding some really exciting items for your bidding pleasure that we’ve been remiss in posting new information on the wonderful businesses that have donated items to our upcoming Auction.  We’d like to take this opportunity to thank:

Front Royal Canoe (Front Royal) donated two gift certificates for $65. each for Outfitting Services.  This is a fun way to spend a day.
Bark n Bubbles (Leesburg) has given us a free “You Wash” with a blueberry facial!  Imagine how great your dog will smell after this bath!
Virginia Pistol LLC (Linden) donated a gift certificate for $100.  They specialize in Handgun and Citizen Awareness Training.
Yummy eating from:
Kilroys (Springfield) – 3 $25. Gift certificates
Foxfire Grill (Alexandria) – 2 $25. Gift Certificates
Blue Ridge Grill (Leesburg) - $25 Gift Certificate
Shear Elegance Pet Boutique (Front Royal) supports our dogs and donated a gift certificate valued up to $40 for grooming.

Kelly Walker, local artist (Front Royal) and dog lover extraordinaire, gave us a variety of items including various pet related items, a Gift Certificate for a Pet Portrait of one pet in Acrylic, as well as a gift certificate for two art classes and a hand painted tray.
Historic Long Branch has offered us 12 passes for a museum tour as well as some unique Long Branch gift items.

Erica Shipley, local artist (Linden) has donated two pet portraits.  What a great way to honor your four legged friend!

Elinor Coleman’s Vintage Mirage (Alexandria) continues her support of VGSR as she donated a very unique vintage cigar box purse with a leopard embellishment.
Advance Auto Parts (Stephens City) donated a DIY Oil Change.

We’ve added many other items from “Friends of VGSR.”  This year’s Auction is filled with something for everyone.  Take the time to go through the Catalog and we are sure you will find several “GOT TO HAVE” items.  If you can’t join us, remember you can bid absentee on Silent Auction items or ask a friend who will be attending to buy raffle tickets for the Chinese Auction for you.  Bid to WIN! Don’t miss this opportunity to get a head start on your holiday shopping while supporting VGSR’s important mission.

Breweries Support VGSR!

Lady's seal of approval!
Two local breweries, Blue Mountain Brewery and Starr Hill Brewery, made donations to the upcoming Auction.  One of our volunteers offered to pick up the baskets and, as many of our German Shepherds love to ride in the car, he took one of his fosters, Lady, along for the trip.  He reports that Lady, a senior GSD, is such a good passenger!  She can't stand in a moving vehicle as she's too wobbly for that, so she just lies quietly in the back and enjoys the sites.

Both of the gift baskets from the breweries are similar- an (empty) growler, a couple glasses, and a variety of other items presented in a galvanized ice bucket with the brewery's logo.  Both are very nice and the generosity of both breweries is greatly appreciated.

Lady epitomizes the goals of the rescue and the need for the fundraising effort.  She's a senior dog, which are often more costly in terms of vet care, and this one has a number of known medical problems.  We probably won't recoup any of the cost through an adoption fee because she's pretty much unadoptable.  Financially speaking, she will be a drain on the rescue even though we aren't going to do anything heroic for her medically.  But we aren't in this to make a buck, the goal is to save dogs. She needs and deserves the best care we can give her even if it's only to keep her well fed, pain-free, happy and comfortable in a loving home for as long as possible.
Starr Hill is in Crozet, Blue Mountain is out in Nelson County.  Stop by the breweries for some great beer and to let them know you appreciate their support of VGSR.  Come to the Auction and bid generously on these and the other wonderful items we are offering.
