Introducing Raven, a new member of the VGSR Family

Wonder why we do what we do?  This little girl's story may help you understand why the upcoming Golf Tournament and Auction fundraiser is so important as it provides funds to help us care for dogs similar to Raven

This sweet beautiful girl is Raven.  Raven's story is not unique but even after years rescuing and fostering it still breaks my heart to see neglect and/or abuse of these wonderful dogs.  Raven's previous owner of 6 years, bred her and shortly after her puppies were old enough to be taken from her, dumped her in an overcrowded shelter.  Raven arrived in the shelter severely underweight with an eye infection and mange.  The shelter felt Raven needed a second chance at a good life and contacted VGSR.  In the couple weeks at the shelter, Raven put on a few pounds, and in her very short time with us, is eating very well and should be putting on more weight in no time.  We are also working to get rid of her infection, mange, and hopefully grow some of her missing hair back.  Through all the recent change she has gone through, and even with the pain and discomfort she has been in, Raven has remained so incredibly sweet and loving.  She hasn't had much training but she wants nothing more than to please her humans.  She is a typical velcro GSD and follows her humans everywhere.  Since she has been in some pain and discomfort we think her true personality is still coming out but from what we've seen so far, she is a great dog.  She rides well in a car, is very well behaved at the vet, is calm and patient when being bathed, and just really wants to be loved.  In her foster home, she's living with 3 other GSDs. We understand that she lived with children between the ages of 7-9 and did wonderfully with them.

For more information on Raven or any of our foster dogs, please go to our website
at www. shepherdrescue.org.

Can you believe these great donations?

Happy Will Greet You!
What a wonderful donation from Harvest Moon Natural Foods in Winchester - a gift certificate for 50% off your next total purchase!  Getting ready to stock up on Supplements, Organic Produce, Dairy Free Foods, Wheat Free and Gluten Free Products, Health and Beauty Products, Organic Cleaning products and/or Organic Pet Supplies?  Harvest Moon, located in Creekside Station, is the place to go and winning this gift certificate, in our Auction, is the way to get your shopping done.  Check out their website at http://www.shophealthy.com or stop by and meet Happy.  Let them know you appreciate their generosity as well as their love of dogs!

In the same shopping center, is another “Moon.”  Lavender Moon Soap Company donated a lovely gift bag with soap and washcloth.  Their luxurious vegetable glycerin soaps are hand poured, hand wrapped and tied. Vegetable glycerin is a natural humectant which attracts and retains moisture in your skin.  This is a great gift bag and we’re sure that once you try Lavender Moon’s soaps, you’ll keep going back for more.  Check out their products at http://www.lavendermoonsoap.com.

We are very pleased to welcome a new donor to the VGSR Auction.  Bristles & Shears in Sterling has given us a wonderful gift bag.  Not only does it include a Gift Certificate for a Color, Haircut and Blowdry (valued at $130) but the bag includes products to help you keep your awesome look after you leave the shop.  In the August 2005 issue of the WASHINGTONIAN, Bristles & Shears was named as both a "Top Salon" and also "Top Colorist".  One of our very beloved VGSR volunteers, a regular at Bristles & Shears, can vouch for their talented stylists.  Don’t miss your chance to bid and win on this great prize! Check them out at http://www.bristles-shears.com

Full Frame Photography

Great auction donations were just received from Full Frame Photography in Winchester, VA. The donated items include a lovely framed print of a sailboat in Tahiti and two Full Frame Photography Gift Cards ($75. each) for use with a studio session or other services.  The proprietor, Lauri Bridgeforth’s work is varied and includes personal, architecture, weddings, restorations and commercial photography.  Lauri says that ”Most of my work involves creating dynamic corporate, architectural, and product images, both in the studio and on location.  Part of your job is realizing the vital role high quality professional photography plays in advertising and marketing. Another part of your job is obtaining the highest quality within your budget. I can give you the best of both worlds!”  Check out some of her work at www/fullframephoto.com.

We are so pleased that Lauri and her family have become part of the VGSR family.  Not only is Lauri a talented and generous photographer but her family are German Shepherd lovers.  They have two shepherds that they adopted from VGSR - a senior named Luke and a GSD/Chow puppy named Duke.  Lauri understands how important our fundraising efforts are and just how much it costs to provide for the great dogs of VGSR.
With few exceptions, the adoption fee does not come close to covering the foster dog’s vet expenses.   Average vetting costs for the "relatively healthy" foster is between $400-$600 which covers wellness exam, spay or neuter, minor ailments including infected ears, de-worming, wounds, mange and other skin conditions, urinary infections, etc., and heartworm and flea/tick preventatives.  VGSR makes a commitment to every dog we bring into rescue and sadly some of these dogs have more costly needs including heart worm treatment, diagnostics, surgeries, RX food and medications.
We thank friends and businesses, like Full Frame Photography, for their generous donations and look forward to HUGE participation by all our friends at the upcoming Auction.

Potomac Riverboat Company

We appreciate each and every one of our sponsors and auction donors.  Without their generosity, we would not be able to save the many dogs who have become part of the VGSR family and have been given a second chance at a good loving life.  Since we began in 2001, VGSR has saved over 3000 dogs.  Most of our supporters are animal lovers; some dog lovers and many love our special breed, German Shepherds.

This is the case with a new Auction donor who we would like to welcome and thank for their support.  The Potomac Riverboat Company has generously donated tickets for many of their boat cruises to our Auction.  Check out our updated Auction Catalog (on the right under Important Documents) for details.

VGSR Volunteers Enjoy Cruising!
If you happen to stop by their office in Old Town Alexandria, you will be greeted by Rio, the German Shepherd “loverboy” who joined their family this Spring.  Their Canine Cruise around the Alexandria seaport is a fun way for humans and canines to enjoy an evening out!  While the other sightseeing cruises are only for humans, they are a great way to see DC without dealing with traffic!  Thank you!
We look forward to seeing many of you at the upcoming Golf Tournament and Auction.  If you have any questions on the exciting day, want more information on the dogs who will be at the event to greet you or want to know how to donate or sponsor -  please email us at golf4dogs@gmail.com or post a comment here!  We love to hear from our friends.

Some Exciting Auction Items

Petco, Crooked Run Plaza, continues to support VGSR.  Not only are they the host for Front Royal Adoption Events but they just donated a Wellness Foods Gift Basket for the upcoming Auction.  The basket is filled with lots of goodies - including bowl, collar, leash, toys, treats and food.  Sherry, the store manager, is a devoted supporter of Rescue.  Thank you!

Sinking Creek Pottery is another repeat donor to our Auction.  Zenah makes some incredible pottery and has given us two mugs – one each for dog and cat lovers.  As the owner of two of her amazing mugs, I know these will bring a smile to your face as you drink your morning coffee or tea.

Jeanne Taylor Photography is a generous Auction donor. Jeanne has  donated a gift certificate, valued at $340, for a one hour photo session and $100 credit towards print purchases.  She specializes in natural setting pet portraits.  Check out Jeanne’s website at http://www.jtpetpics.com/index.htm

Skyline Caverns is a new donor.  They contributed two Guest Passes for a Tour of the Caverns.  Located in Front Royal, Virginia, Skyline Caverns is the closest natural wonder to the Nation's Capital. As one of the only places on Earth where rare Anthodites are displayed, the guided tour is as impressive as it is educational.
Back in the Pack is another new donor.  They have donated a gift certificate for $250 towards their training programs or other services.  Training is a great way to ensure that your 4 legged friend becomes a well integrated member of your family.

We have also added many other terrific items, donated by Friends of VGSR.  Please look at the updated Auction Catalog, posted under Important Documents on the right.  Remember, while we would love to see you at the Auction and Dinner - you don’t have to be present to WIN.

New Auction Donations

We want to give a huge thank you to the following companies that are continuing their support of the VGSR Auction.  This is one of VGSR's main fundraisers and we could not do what we do without the generosity of these friends of VGSR.

Liberty Hill Pet Resort has donated one free swim or day of doggie daycare.  We appreciate their continued support of our Auction.  Liberty Hill provides a country vacation for your dog when you go on your vacation. They love running around the farm and occasionally barking at the cows or sheep. Why leave them stuck inside a kennel run when they could be playing at Liberty Hill?

Shenandoah University has a wonderful Summer Music Theatre Program and has donated tickets for two to one of their 2013 performances.  The University has supported several VGSR Auctions with donations of theatre tickets.
Shenandoah Summer Music Theatre produces four Broadway musicals each summer in the beautiful 630-seat Ohrstrom-Bryant Theatre on the campus in Winchester, VA.

We want to welcome Grand Home Furnishings in Winchester, VA, a new Auction donor, and hope that this is the beginning of a long term relationship.  Grand Home Furnishings has donated a table lamp to our Auction.

Grand Home Furnishings is the leading furniture chain in Virginia, West Virginia and East Tennessee. They invite you to visit one of their 17 stores for exceptional selections of furniture and mattresses.
Please stop by and visit these businesses and let them know that you appreciate their support!
