Meet Sweet Maia

Maia at the beach
We adopted Maia #3047 last August.  She was found as a stray with her five puppies.  The good samaritan who found her was able to find homes for four of the puppies, but Maia and one pup  came into VGSR.  Barb was her foster mom and had Maia a few days when we met her at the Front Royal Petsmart Adoption Day.  We drove up to Maryland a week later to adopt Maia.  Since then, she has become a beloved (and spoiled) member of the family.  She gets along great with her elderly lab sister.  She loves to play with her toys, give kisses, run laps around the outside of the house, and cool off by taking a dip in the pond.  She is in advanced obedience where she is working to  improve her social skills with other dogs. We adore her!
Maia loves her toys.

Yes, We Can

Some people don't understand the concept of "Rescue" and question why anyone would go out of their way to adopt a dog that has been given up, neglected, or abandoned.  These people often have not been lucky enough to meet a "Rescue" and don't understand the love that these dogs provide, thousand times over or their potential to achieve.  All they need is the love and support of their adoptive family.  We thought we would share Flower's success with you, as told by her Mom:

"We are happy to let you know that our "little girl" has not only turned into a beauty, she has passed the test to be a certified (TDI) - Therapy Dogs International - a couple of weeks ago. I mailed all the requirements to the TDI establishment last week - and we are exciting about helping those less fortunate and hope to bring joy to children, adults and those that may need comfort.

On their site (TDI) they say that therapy dogs are "born" with the "inherant temperament" be a therapy dog. This is so true for our little Flower. She is not only beautiful - but she is so well behaved, very smart and we are very proud of her. She is a happy dog, very content in our home and we are so grateful to Christine Young who brought her over here for the "home visit". We have had her almost a year now, and it is as though she belongs here and we were meant to be her family.

She now weighs 45 pounds, looks more like a Border Collie - and she is strikingly gorgeous. I get the comment on how beautiful and gorgeous she is from young and old whenever we go for a walk.

She is so very loved by her mom and dad. Her and her "brother" Charlie love each other so much and now protect each other when we visit the Dog Park.  Thanks to the Dog Park, it made her even more social."
Please support the upcoming Golf Tournament and Auction -  be a sponsor, donate an auction item, play in the tournament, attend the dinner, bid and win at the auction.  There are so many ways you can support our great dogs and have a wonderful time in the process.

What a Pair!

We’d love to share some information about our 4 legged family members with you.

Coby, on the left was a owner  surrender who spent most of his first year and a half in a pen and did not get much attention.  My wife and I began fostering Coby in December of 2011.  While we may have failed fostering, we won the family lottery when we adopted this sweet boy!  Coby likes to watch fast-moving things, he wants to please, and he likes to play with a 14 inch hard plastic ball that frustrates him because he can't get his mouth around it.  Coby is in advanced obedience class, and he is improving all the time.  Coby also gives the very best ever morning hugs.

Bella on the right spent most of her first 9 months chained to a tree. She did not have a shelter and the tree that she was attached to was hit by lighting.  We have had Bella about a year now, She is also in advanced obedience. Bella is the family clown, she has that mischievous air. Bella will pick up something that she knows she is not supposed to have and bring it to show you.  Bella is in fascinated with our 12 year old cat, Josie, she will bow to her when she enters a room. She is also the grand instigator of play.  Every home needs a Bella!

Yes, they are spoiled, but they are our kids.  We take them with us when we travel – they enjoyed their first beach trip to the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

Coby, Bella, Josie, Terry, & Bix  live outside Harrisonburg, Va.
